Youth Voice Event Tower Hamlets Homes

Saturday 19th March 2011

The Journalist set off to document a local event at the Waterlily hosted by Tower Hamlets Homes, a housing association who was celebrated the work of their youth board.

LiC also had an stall which the journalist managed as well as filming the event and key people who organised the show. The event highlighted of very proactive young people in our local area- It really inspired our team to continue our creative work- knowing there are others who are also making a difference to their community.

The day was very enjoyable with food and drinks, and many information stalls. There were a lot of acts who performed, which showed just how talented young people really are- from singing, to dance and body popping, which we all enjoyed. The event was a great way for local young people to support each other and be good role models for others. We enjoyed meeting many other organisations of the day from The youth involvement team to community Safety.

LiC young Journalist make it to the BAFTA youth mentor Programme

Thursday the 17th March 2011

We all head down to Leciester Square as part of the Media Trust and BAFTA's Youth Mentor Programme.
We were all very excited, the thought of meeting BAFTA people and see the amazing venue, we all heard so much about. And we were not disappointed, it was everything we thought it would be- Champaigne reception, soft drinks- we couldn't ask for much more. Although we did stand out of the crowd, not just because of our brown faces... but the vibrant colours of our shirts...:)

The actual screening was a long process as there were many films to get through we, were disapointed our film didn't make the screening, but a all round great opportunity to be invited to the BAFTAs, and great photo opportunity with the golden face..

Pictures to follow..

Following on from our round table discussions on Youth and the Environment, the team headed to the Rich Mix centre on Saturday the 5th March to visit an all day exhibition that explored different ways groups are resisting the 'corporate power' through discussions, workshops, debates, ideas and action about how the world can be a better place for people with democracy comes before profit.
The young journalists visited some of the workshops disscussing some of the issues such as poverty, fair trade, history of money, different views about Islam in Britain and how Islam has contributed to modern western world.
The young journalists interviewed many different people at the event who were there for many different reasons. One of the interview's was a resident from West Bank in Palestine here in Britain for a visit for 15 days. The second interview is a student who was giving a lecture about the history of money.
We also interviewed another student who discussed the different views on Islam in Britain today
The journalists collected a few materials from different workshops in the event e.g. badges, booklets and leaflets to share with others in the group that could not attend.

Round Table Discussion Youth and Environment

26th FEB 2011

This week the journalists went to the Muslim Youth Network (MYN)
A Round Table Discussion : Muslim Youth And Environment
Facilated by Sabino Miranda [Climate Change Youth Development Trust (CCYDT)]
On saturday 15 young people went on a trip to Ilford Islamic centre. The reason we visited that centre was for youth and environment. we learnt alot of things from poverty to environment, We learnt things like more greener places and why they are important. We also expressed our feeling on pollution, how factorys and cars are causing so much pollution to the earth, how money is going to be tight in the future and how teenagers are living there lives whether a good one or a bad one. we enjoyed that session very much and learned alot of things, such as jobs in the green industry will be the forward as most jobs are in limited supply. As the environmental future unfolds, there will be more jobs in the "green" industry such as running your own invironmently friendly business.

Exhibition at SOAS:Western Appreciation of Arab and Islamic Civilisation in the Arcadian Library

19th FEB 2011
This week the LiC journalists visited: Western Appreciation of Arab and Islamic Civilisation in the Arcadian Library
A display of holdings from the Arcadian Library the University of SOAS, examining the centuries-old relationship between the West and the Arab and Islamic world through books, engravings, manuscripts and documents. On display there were books that were hand drawn and editions of scientific texts - medical, astronomical and alchemical - that illustrate the impact of Islam's scientific minds on western learning from medieval times to the European Renaissance and beyond.
The young journalists found it interesting and were very keen of interviewing Ben the Curator. Young journalist Aminul says 'It was very intersting because we learned who created the fountain pens, maths,  medicine books and more. All of these were created by the Arabs then it was past on to the Europeans for it to be developed and then it was take by the Wests`.
